I'm curious as to how one totes around ammunition for an M249 SAW.

Either a 200 round soft pouch or 100 round soft pouch.

Soft pouches are flexible and portable ammo pouches designed with zippers along the pouches sides for easy reloading. They are cloth (either woven nomex or nylon) and are durable, portable, and flexible. Unlike the polymer, 200 or 100 round ammo drums that saw gunners had to use back in the day.

Some gunners prefer drums though. It's the most common type of ammo carrier for the SAW, but the plate that opend on the side for reloading tends to break or snap off--in addition to the plastic feeding plate on the drum that tends to break or snap off.

Both have pro's and cons--I've seen some units just go "rambo-style" and carry belts of ammo on their guns or on themselves. For gunteams that were carrying the M240 Bravo, and had no 7.62 ammo pouches, this was often a necessity.
