Kandahar, Afghanistan

The door gunner of a CH-146 Griffon helicopter scans the terrain as it provides escort support to the CH-147 Chinook helicopter as the Chinook transports coalition personnel to Forward Operating Bases (FOB) in southern Afghanistan

The Canadian Forces expanded its presence as the Joint Task Force-Afghanistan Air Wing was officially stood up at Kandahar Airfield. JTF-Afg Air Wing will be working toward providing the task force with transportation, surveillance and reconnaissance assets that will contribute to mission success in Afghanistan. It is comprised of the Canadian Helicopter Force (Afghanistan) with its CH-147 D-model Chinook helicopters and its CH-146 Griffon helicopters, the Canadian Heron UAV Detachment, and the Theatre Support Element with its CC-130 Hercules aircraft.

Canada’s military contribution to Afghanistan is known as Joint Task Force - Afghanistan (JTF-Afg). The Task Force comprises of approximately 2,800 personnel with operations focusing on working with Afghan authorities to improve security, governance and economic development in the country.

Joint Task Force is one of the groups I respect the most. They've really made a name for themselves in Afghanistan too. Canada never disappoints.

Nah it's definitely Afghanistan. If I'm correct those are poppy fields down there? 90% of Afghanistan's income comes from the Heroine trade, which is why they are so poor because the Coalition's entry into Afghanistan destroyed this industry.

Don't want to sound snarky, but I'd feel a little guilty if I didn't stop to put forth some sound info here ...

As of 2006, the opium trade accounted for ~35% of Afghanistan's GDP — a huge amount, no doubt, but not 90% huge. And believe it or not, the presence of the coalition forces has helped the opium trade. The Taliban put a ban on growing opium in 2001, which cut down opium production by a drastic amount (enough that the U.S. gave the Taliban a $43 million dollar reward for it's anti-drug efforts ... O.O), but once the Taliban was ousted it was back to business as usual, and opium production has been enjoying record growth ever since.

An estimated 6% of Afghan farming land is used for growing opium ... so the fields in this awesome photo are more likely to be cereals or grains or pistachios or pomegranates than poppy.

Sorry for the rant, great photo, and I'm out. :)

Oh, trust me, I understand that. But cultivated land looks like cultivated land, no matter what the crop. 'tis a shame they have to grow such stuff when other things are available.

I heard in the news about how a NATO helicopter got shot down by insurgents recently.

I sure hope these guys stay safe in the air.
