The Canadian Forces expanded its presence as the Joint Task Force-Afghanistan Air Wing was officially stood up at Kandahar Airfield. JTF-Afg Air Wing will be working toward providing the task force with transportation, surveillance and reconnaissance assets that will contribute to mission success in Afghanistan. It is comprised of the Canadian Helicopter Force (Afghanistan) with its CH-147 D-model Chinook helicopters and its CH-146 Griffon helicopters, the Canadian Heron UAV Detachment, and the Theatre Support Element with its CC-130 Hercules aircraft.
Canada’s military contribution to Afghanistan is known as Joint Task Force - Afghanistan (JTF-Afg). The Task Force comprises of approximately 2,800 personnel with operations focusing on working with Afghan authorities to improve security, governance and economic development in the country.
