Hokkaido, Japan by MilitaryPhotos Hokkaido, Japan by MilitaryPhotos
Marines patrol through strong winds and heavy snow March 2 during a comprehensive bilateral field training exercise as part of Exercise Forest Light 13-3 at the Hokkaido-Dai Maneuver Area in Hokkaido prefecture, Japan. The FTX began with the Marines and JGSDF (陸上自衛隊) patrolling separately on foot and with mechanized vehicles to reach an area where they set up a defensive position. Forgive my stupidity but is the US occupying Japan for some reason?

Well, after WWII the US forced a demilitarization of Japan. We set up some bases and haven't left since.

It isn't so much of an occupation as much as it is that the US has bases all around the planet. Japan, S.Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Germany, the U.K, you name it, the U.S probably has a military presence there of some sort.

Not just that really, one of the MAIN reasons was to actually help defend Japan from North Korea since the N. Koreans have been trying to threaten everyone around them with missiles and all. And I also agree with SM51, Im sure there was an agreement something similar to that so yeah. So I hope you guys understand why the US military is there. :D

HK M27 IAR if anyone was wondering, an excellent if not very light 5.56 rifle with great optics (TA11 3.5x ACOG/piggy-back RMR) and a really useful 'proper' bi-pod. Nice to see Allied troops training for things other than the sandbox...

Japan does rely heavily on the US for its defense as its irreplaceable ally.
As Japanese, I'm grateful that these people would fight for us.

Sure, there may be some conflicts and accidents, but so does the JSDF.
If nation wants a solid national defense, its needs to pay a fair price, often more than just money.

They were here for us when we needed help.
Never forget 3.11, Op. Tomodachi.

Thank you, everyone in the US Armed Forces!

Even if you buy your own, "better" gear, they still make you wear the cheap, standard stuff... Can't even wear a nice set of boots unless they have the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor stamped on the heel. It seems stupid, but since there's not an easy way of determining if your gear is actually "better," they just keep to the issued gear... that way there's no one to blame versus if you were to get blown up with your "better" plate carrier and it didn't stop some shrapnel and you ended up dieing. Then there could be issues with your family getting compensation because you didn't follow the standard and just wear what was issued. It's a lose-lose situation most of the time... it's not like a company is going to make something, sell it for an extreme price to civilians/DoD personnel, claim it's better than X, and not follow through, but... you never know. It could happen, and the cheap, standard issue gear might have saved your life.

Lot of negative stuff you can say about the US and the Marines but you can also look at is as a very personal look at some guys (girls?..humans?)..doing their job. Doing what they have to do as far as they know.
Its a shitty job.
Some of these guys might have seen their buddies blown to shreds by IUD's in Afghanistan.
I wouldn't want to be them.

I agree. I know quite a few Marines who have suffered such pain. They actually feel the same way I do. I'm not against soldiers, just the bureaucrats that sacrifice them for their greed. My grandparents fought in WW2 and I thank them every chance I get.

That is the point I was trying to make.
My Dad was in the navy in WW 2 and I was just chatting to one of his friends who was "on submarines" as he puts it.
What a horror story. *Many* horror stories and he was on the winning side.
Couldn't get me to do that for any money but those guys did it because it was the right thing to do.
I really should stop talking about it though.

True enough.
I've been through that phase and I am trying not to go back there.
Its the looking like an idiot part by making mistakes such as the IED/IUD mistake that pisses me off.
If that was the only stupid thing I'd ever posted while drunk it wouldn't be so bad.
You know how you can delete or hide comments when people post on your art or DA site?
I think I should be able to delete my own posts the next day on someone else's art.
DA doesn't let me do that dammit.

I swear you can delete your comments? But no, I just checked, you can't. I never noticed that before :/
Damn, I haven't been using this site in a while. I'm looking for a different site at the moment anyway; the quality of things hitting the front page here has been REALLY hitting low grades. The likes of 10-minute pony drawings and half-assed pieces of eight-line melodramatic poetry constantly getting daily deviation is just daft.
Mind you, the interface is still pretty good, not being able to delete comments aside. But I'm still gonna pack up and set up shop elsewhere, the community has become "proper downs" so to speak, and I want to find a site where the admins or whoever select sensible, high-quality works for the goddamn front page.
/end rant! woo!
