How old are you? Is there anything stopping you from walking in the recruiting station?

i'm 17, and there is nothing stopping me from going to the recruiter. i'm actually working on getting in now, but that's the back up plan if i can't get to the Naval Academy or the Merchant Academy or to any college i'm going to enlist then be an officer.

Well, in order to be an officer, you need a four year college degree. You could still enlist as a grunt.

Right. And if you understood basic history, you'd know war is a constant; that there will always be war, regardless of how much we want peace, or how many armies we disband. I don't know about you, but I'd rather not be ruled whatever tinpot dictator raised a militia that day.

I was in the Marines for 8 years. If you think you enlisted to have fun, you are going to be one miserable little shit. You might even make it to the end of your enlistment without getting thrown out.
Have fun 'warrior'. haha!

Where did he get it?
Will it be used by the Afghan Army, or was it some sort of "weekend project" for the US-Troops in Afghanistan?

Out of curiosity, why is he test-firing an old Soviet howitzer? Is it being provided to the Afghani Military or something?

that is what i would guess, my question is why precisely is it the US Army's job to refurbish their weapons for them?

Because Afghans can hardly hold their own government together, let alone deal with advanced technology (which, in this case, ain't that advanced).

Electricity? Given to them. Weapons? Given to them. Running water? Given to them (Sure, they know how to irrigate by digging massive tunnel systems, but it's not like they came up with the idea).

I could go on for hours, but I'd rather not piss any possible "sympathetic" readers out there. I'm as sympathetic as anyone should be; but, enough is enough.

They are often fired by string, it's just not usually that long. It's usually only 2-3 feet long.

I don't believe it is. According to the caption this is a refurbished one undergoing testing, so it's probably more a safety precaution in case of a misfire or detonation. Though I'm not sure a few feet of rope would be much of a safety margin. . .
